Northern Star International Skating Competition is a local skating competition hosted by the City of East Grand Forks and Northern Lights Figure Skating Club.
The Individual Competition involves anywhere from 200-220 Individual Skaters that compete in 6 different events. Events include: Free Skate, Compulsory, Short Program, Spins, Solo Dance and Dramatic and Light Entertainment Showcase Events. Skaters range in age from 5-18 and represent numerous skating clubs from around the region. The Individual Competition is located at the VFW Arena in EGF. Competition times are: TBD Admission is free.
Along with the Individual Competition is a Synchronized Skating Competition. On an average, 20-25 synchronized skating teams come here to compete and show off their amazing skills. The synchronized skating competition will be held Sunday, January 12th. Adult Admission is $8, K-12 Admission is $5 and Under 5 is Free.
For both the Individual and Synchronized Skating competitions, approximately 12-16 judges and officials come from all over the United States. These individuals provide their skating expertise on a volunteer basis. NLFSC pays their expenses to get them to our competition and while they are here for the duration of the competition.
Northern Star takes approximately 1 year to plan and organize. This competition is an organized effort between Parents, Coaches, Skaters and Volunteers who donate their time to make this competition a success from year to year.

ATTENTION LEARN TO SKATE SKATERS!!!!!
Please join us for the Basic Skills Competition to be held in January 2025 at the VFW Arena! This event is hosted by the Northern Lights FSC and EGF parks & Rec is a GREAT way to introduce your skater to individual competition. This event is designed for younger skaters that participate in the Learn to Skate program are ready to perform individually! All skaters receive a medal and no private coaching is required. The registration Deadline is TBD. There are no late entries allowed.
Who's it for:
*Skaters in Snowplow Sam - Basic 8, Freestyle 1-6
Events:
*Elements - the skater is told by the judge what to perform, and the skater shows them they can do the move (snowplow stop, spiral, inside three turn, etc.). The skaters go out on the ice in a small group with other skaters in the same level/group.
*Elements with Music - this is a 1:00 minute routine done to music where the skater showcases their ability to incorporate all their elements into a routine.
What do they wear/how do they get music:
*We can help to find dresses to borrow if needed and with music options. We are working with parks and rec to find a practice time for coaches to help skaters practice and prepare. Those dates will be announced and with specific details at a date closer to the competition.
What level do I sign up for:
*You can sign up for their current level or one level below
**Example: Basic 5 skater can compete in Basic 4 or 5 level

Northern Star is run by volunteers!
All Northern Lights FSC families are required to volunteer for 3 shifts at the Northern Star Competition. (Concessions shifts do not count as Northern Star Shifts)
